PRESS RELEASE ON THE 2020 UNWTO – WORLD TOURISM DAY CELEBRATION IN THE WESTERN REGION.

The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC), the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the other agencies under the Ministry will be celebrating this year’s UNWTO World Tourism Day (WTD) event from 22nd – 27th September, 2020 in the Western Region.

The programme is an annual event which is celebrated globally every year, on 27th September 2020, to highlight the significance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic significance around the world.

The WTD 2020 is being held under the theme: “TOURISM AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT”, which seeks to celebrate the sector’s unique ability to drive economic development and provide opportunities outside of big cities, including communities that would otherwise be left behind. The World Tourism Day 2020 also underscores the important role tourism plays in preserving and promoting cultural heritage and curbing urban migration in Ghana and the world at large.

The 2020 edition of the World Tourism Day is also to derive maximum economic impact from the effects of the covid-19 pandemic and to invariably put tourism as the topmost priority on the Government of Ghana’s agenda.

This position was amply stated in a recent release of a landmark policy brief on tourism by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in which he emphasized that “for rural communities, indigenous peoples and many other historically marginalized populations, tourism has been a vehicle for integration, empowerment and generating income”. Hence, the theme for this year’s event ‘Tourism and Rural Development’.

This flagship programme under the tourism ministry is expected to take place between 22nd – 27th September 2020, in Bogoso and Takoradi in the Western Region of Ghana, with the Activities lined up as follows:

  • Virtual Symposium via Zoom – 22nd September, 2020.
  • Health Walk – 26th September, 2020, Bogoso.
  • Tree Planting Exercise – 26th September, 2020, Bogoso.
  • Musical Concert -26th September, 2020, Bogoso.
  • Grand Durbar and Photo Exhibition – 27th September, 2020, Takoradi.

We, therefore, entreat the general public, the residents of the host region, industry players in the Tourism Arts &Culture industry and the media in particular to endeavour to support the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in its quest to commemorate the up-coming event.

Support by all and sundry for the occasion, would undoubtedly help the Government of Ghana and the Ministry to resuscitate the tourism sector as we contend with the Covid-19 pandemic by promoting the important role tourism plays in the socio, cultural and economic development of the country.
