Lawyers for Minister of Education, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, to retract defamatory statement and falsehood peddled against the minister in connection with Seidu Yakubu, one of the suspects in the kidnapping of two Canadians in Kumasi on June 4, 2017.
Mr. Gyamfi at a press conference held on June 13, 2019, claimed that per facts gathered by the NDC, Seidu Yakubu aka Seidu ‘MBA’ was an errand boy for Dr. Prempeh.
But lawyers for the minister, Sarkodie Baffour Awuah and Partners say that there was no truth in what Mr. Gyamfi said at the press conference.
In a letter dated June 14, 2019, the lawyers said that Mr. Gyamfi should render an unqualified apology to the education minister, in the manner the defamatory statement and falsehood were published in 48 hours after receiving the letter.
According to the lawyers, legal action would be initiated against Mr. Gyamfi if he fails to do so.
They said that the statement that Seidu was an errand boy for the minister was not only false but malicious as the said Seidu was never an errand boy for the minister.
According to the lawyers, the statement by Mr. Gyamfi sought to portray Dr. Prempeh as someone who associate himself with thugs and that he promotes thuggery.
They said that the malicious and defamatory statement was made with malice to damage the reputation of Dr. Prempeh, who is a respected Member of Parliament and Minister of the Republic Ghana.
They said notwithstanding the malice, Dr. Prempeh was magnanimous enough to offer Mr. Gyamfi an opportunity to make amends.
They are therefore asking him to retract the defamatory statement and apologize accordingly.
